I am a bit sad to know that this is the last we will see of Michael and the Discovery. I haven‘t actually watched it yet, only seen some preview and promo pictures, but I‘m looking forward to watching it later this year.

So after some discussion I wrote and posted a meta about Michael questioning whether or not she ever wanted to be captain. X

I was really, really pleased with the writing for Michael in the last episode, but I saw some people who were surprised or confused by how different she seemed and decided to writte a meta about why the change made sense to me and I'd love to discuss some of these ideas with other fans if you're interested.

Summary: The Federation was always the cruellest when it tried to be kind.

The marker stared Michael down. It was plain, grey, and double ended: a thick felt tip on one end, a fine pen on the other. It was shiny the way most replicated objects were, not quite metal and not quite plastic.

Along with basic foods and items from each of the Federation cultures, each replicator contained a pattern for soulmate facilitation devices. Even prison replicators had them. The Federation weren’t monsters, after all. Not even to Michael, who was one.

I was watching The Vulcan Hello with two friends, and after I had I just smiled dreamily at the screen, one of them -- male, White, Californian -- said that the episode just "didn't work" for him; that it "didn't feel like Star Trek."

Of course I asked whether he didn't like the Klingons (because I sure didn't like the undertones), but he said that they were okay -- that Michael and Phillippa together were the problem. Didn't feel like the captain and first officer.

And I was flabbergasted. I'm a fan, but I'm not deluded enough that the pilot couldn't be improved upon. Still to me, that means MORE BURNHAM AND GEORGIOU, not less. I thought about the two of them and wondered whether they work for me as the child of a less casual culture: one that has a formal form of address (much like "usted" and "ustedes" in Spanish) as well as strong but specific bonds between people on different levels of authority, with boundaries that are quietly understood. I found Burnham and Georgiou resounding based on my experience, my background. But perhaps it doesn't work equally well on other viewers with, well, other backgrounds?

I usually have a really hard time coming up with titles, but this time Michael's line about them not being able to both be anchors at the same time came to mind. The whole "you're my anchor" concept beautifully embodies their relationship (and its positive as well as negative issues) I think.
