- I'm confused by all the fat-shaming of Grudge. She's lorge, and maybe chonky, but she's not even a unit, absolute or otherwise! - OTOH her purr is loud enough for a much larger cat - I am FULLY HERE for Michael and Book saving each other and being friends and falling in love - I am NOT FULLY HERE for Linus cockblocking them - I don't know how to feel about Michael being demoted from first officer? (It's okay, guys, there's a job title beyond "number one" and you're allowed to use it.) Like, it's cool to see consequences for once -- remember all those times Worf took leave so he could go fight in a foreign war? -- but I am reserving judgement until I see how the season unfolds. - I kind of just want Michael to fuck off with Book and Georgiou, and they can cruise around the galaxy saving people and having adventures, while Book asks himself why his girlfriend's mum invited herself along and is it just because she secretly loves Grudge - The rescue plot felt like a Doctor Who story, if the Doctor is AWOL from a pseudo-military organisation and her companion is her evil adoptive mum from another universe. Subterfuge! Roleplay! Everybody lives (except the bad guys)! - We know nothing whatsoever about the leader of the Emerald Chain yet, save that she's evil and I ship her with Georgiou

I would as well, although the show is kind of retconning Georgiou into "loveably dark and twisted" from "person who was literally eating sentient kelpians when we first met her."
She wouldn't eat Saru because it would make Michael sad. (And I think she keeps trying to figure out what it is about Saru that makes Michael willing to take orders from him.)

Nope! It was meant to film this year, and obviously that hasn't happened, but last I heard, it's still a go. Although I'm told that Michelle Yeoh has the same contract as Patrick Stewart, which gives her the power to choose filming times around her film schedule, so who knows?

YESSSSSSSS this I would watch the hell out of.
I didn't love the rescue plot, only because I felt like I'd seen it a million times, including on Star Trek. But it did make for some terrific Georgiou snark, so I'll let it go. (Mostly I'm wondering what she's having flashbacks to, and how/why David Cronenberg did it.)
I've had a headcanon since THE VERY FIRST EPISODE that Georgiou had and lost a family before Michael came into her life, and the Emperor's comments about babies in season 2 confirmed it. I think she's having flashbacks to finding someone she loved murdered -- but how or why, and what it's got to do with David Cronenberg, who knows?
(I was all set to declare the lost loved one murdered by THAT DASTARDLY LORCA in hopes the universe would hear me and give me a Jason Isaacs cameo, but the timeline doesn't work out if she then went on to adopt Michael. Alas.)
I strongly feel, based on almost no evidence, that "San" is Georgiou's biological daughter. And yeah, it seems pretty clear that David Cronenberg induced it somehow. Is he Terran? (Maybe?) Did the Terrans cause the Burn? (Maybe?)
Georgiou having lost a family of her own would make sense, and would explain why she'd been relying on Michael to continue the family line. I'm going to have to rewatch those bits again to see what I can glean from them; I feel sure I saw a Klingon dagger on the floor at one point.
I don't know how to feel about Michael being demoted from first officer?
On the one hand, I wasn't super thrilled about Michael not taking the captaincy in the first place; it made sense for Saru's character arc, but watching an awesome black woman tell someone played by a white man that he should be in charge, not her, after a pair of consecutive white male captains, made me cringe. (There was a star trek: lower decks episode this season that hit all those same cringe points, when Mariner made herself look like Boimler was her rescuer because not being good at things was such a crisis point for his fragile self image.)
On the other hand, she absolutely needed to be demoted. I know it's a staple of the genre to be a cowboy and get away with it if you save lives, but it's a freaking terrible idea, and I really love that Saru and Tilly are consciously leaning in to more responsible, communally-oriented ethics and duty.
I wrote a long meta post about Michael turning down the position. I think the idea of Michael choosing to step back from the captaincy makes sense for her character. If you think back to s1 she never even wanted to join Starfleet in the first place. As a character, she hasn't had agency in many aspects of her life. I was really glad she asked that question. I want to see how the rest of the season and story unfolds but it made sense to me.
My biggest issue with this episode so though is the crux of the drama was wholly unnecessary. Michael simply could have requested leave to pursue her personal mission. Tilly irritated me. I follow the logic but it irritated me.
The demotion seems valid--I don't think Michael has her heart in the position to say the least--but I also don't think it'll stick tbh.
Who is going to be the first officer now? Theoretically Stamets is the chief engineer and would be number three but I don't think we've ever seen him take the conn. And I think all the other officers are the same rank (lieutenant) or lower, like Tilly? Kind of awkward since Michael is a full commander.
I'm very interested to know what those Vulcans show up for.
Worf requested leave or just straight up quit to pursue those personal missions, which is literally what every other officer did, which kind of deflates the drama of this episode for me and make it feel contrived. The only thing that helped it in was Admiral Vance pointing out that Saru needed to be more flexible and have better judgment himself.
Grudge isn't even fat? She's a Maine Coon. They're healthy if they're tipping the scales at 20+ pounds! Yeah, she's full of fluff and probably looks twice her weight from fur alone, but that, too, is the way of the Maine Coon.
(I follow Seanan McGuire on Twitter and there was a picture of her Maine Coon Thomas curled up, head-to-head, with one of the normal-sized cats. And. Um. I don't really see how big he is, for some reason, till it's this GIANT CAT FACE next to a normal fluffy-cat face. The boy is HUGE.)
Do not fat-shame the healthy, fluffy Maine Coon! ...for one thing, if she thinks you're truly insulting her, she might eat you. >_>
