Sorry this is late! I was ... distracted. Shenanigans ahoy in my local council election, and there's also some sort of other election happening elsewhere.
- I love Adira and Gray so much. SO MUCH. - awkward dinner parties IN SPACE is one of my favourite SF tropes; headpeople is my flatmate's. This is gonna be a good time for us, when she gets home to watch it! - ...Georgia turned blue? Amazing! - I am far too cis to have authoritative opinions on Adira and Gray as representation, save that I really like the story itself but wish it didn't come in a context of many decades of tragic trans stories - OTOH, I'm intrigued that younger trans Trekkies -- turns out I follow a bunch on Tumblr -- love and adore this story wholeheartedly - Michael took one look at Adira and activated BIG SISTER MODE, and I love it - Saru asking Siri for tips on how to make his crew happy: a mood - Siri's tips being a list of Ways We've Coped With 2020: also a mood - I am so glad that Detmer's issues aren't Control-related - SO GLAD, you have no idea - ugh, my least favourite candidate is probably going to get a seat on council - SHE BLOCKED ME ON FACEBOOK FOR ASKING TOO MANY QUESTIONS ABOUT HER CAMPAIGN FUNDING - It's been 800 years and the Trill are still low-key terrible - They're like the Vulcans: they're really awful, but they get away with it because they seem chill - I am delighted by the presence of Ronnie from Schitt's Creek - I feel bad that Michael is left out of the cathartic dinner party/movie night - Soooooo are Linus and Georgiou dating? Like, having sex, sure, but ... dating? I need popcorn for this!
I love Adira and Gray, I also wish that Gray weren't already dead. But given Discovery's previous record, I give it even odds that Gray will somehow come back from the dead/get a body at some point.
I feel like the Trill have actually slightly improved, which is a very low bar.
I also feel that Gray will end up with a body at some point. I mean other characters have managed it in the past so ...
The question there of course becomes what happens with the Tal symbiote if Gray and Adira have bodies? A second symbiotes? One of them adjusting to not being joined?
On the one hand, I really don't love that we have ANOTHER queer storyline where one half of the pairing is dead, that brings back so many bad feelings. On the other hand, Hugh did wind up coming back and he and his grumpy genius are still together, so I'm hopeful. It feels a bit more like a subversion than participating in the same old stereotypes, but we'll see. I also love surprise!corporeal stories with someone getting used to being embodied again, but they better not fuck up the trans aspect if they do that.
I, too, realized that YET AGAIN we have buried a non-cishet. This makes 3, if you count Star Trek Online. -_- (2.5? 1.5?)
(But at least it was backstory? Mmph. And not... not "now we are one forever, <3" and not really appearing again? From the interview the actor gave? I really hope Gray gets a body, BECAUSE oh gods stop killing the non-cishets, but Ghostly Buddy Hijinks... I mean, energy beings abound in Trek. ...or we just need to pour Gray into a young Founder. *halo*)
I liked that even the terrible Trill dude was "uhhh, okay FINE we can't let the human DIE" at the end.
(I kind of hope someone sees Detmer's prosthetic and has a "HELP BORG" freakout at some point, but I dunno what's going on there because I haven't finished watching Picard. ...a "Sister? Are you one of us?" moment might be sadly fascinating as well, but I am Borg Trash so don't mind me.)
The ship is becoming sapient. You've got an AI. And only Saru knows. Please don't be an evil AI, Disco-Siri!
And, in 2am babbling: Adira and Gray are ADORABLE and I look forward to Hijinks.
I'm really curious how "Calypso" is going to end up tied into all this - we've had people refer to the Federation as V'draysh, and now we're getting Discovery developing a personality and a taste for old cinema.
I didn't love that there was a tragic trans story but I'm pretty sure they'll find some way to bring Gray back to life properly, so I'm not too fussed about it. Also I want to adopt both of them and shield them from any bad things happening in their lives ever.
LOOOOOL awkward dinner party. I haven't expressed my love for Saru enough lately but he's so relatable.
What is up with Detmer, though? It seemed like a concussion at first but all of the visuals say "possession" rather than PTSD to me.
OKAY WAIT did they make this whole thing after covid? Because Culber's line about how something can go from survivable to livable was just really on the nose if they didn't. Also go Disco, you finally made me like Culber a bit.
Also fuck you Disco for making me ship Georgiou and Linus, it's not my fault that she has chemistry with every character she interacts with.
I like the Trill and Trill stories so I'm glad we are getting a Trill storyline.
