lizbee: (Star Trek: Lorca and Cornwell)
[personal profile] lizbee posting in [community profile] spacefungusparty
Is up here.

There was also a brief clip on After Trek...

...in which some kind of technology is being planted on the Sarcophagus ship, but Lorca isn't letting Burnham off Discovery even though she's the most logical choice, having actually been there. He seems almost protective, which is terrifying.

Of course, the trailer tells us she's absolutely going over there, so, predictions!

- Georgiou flashbacks, but probably not fresh Michelle Yeoh scenes
- L'Rell is gonna get her chance to activate Ash's sleeper agent personality, at which point shit will get real
- that might even be the cliffhanger -- it's what I'd do

Well, if they meet, that will just make my Kat/Michael shipping tendencies even worse. I just have a feeling that Michael has a thing for older women in positions of authority, especially when they're her mentors.

I actually do ship Burnham/Lorca too, but Kat/Michael is a bit healthier. Maybe Kat and her psychiatrist brain will figure out that Michael, trained under the Vulcan philosophy of suppressing feelings, never learned how to control her emotions when they resurfaced on the Shenzhou, leading to the mutiny. Seriously, shouldn't they have given Burnham a psych eval before they sent her off to prison?

They should have, and maybe even did, but I'm pretty sure "non-Vulcan raised by Vulcans" isn't in the 23rd century DSM. Although given the evidence of Michael, Spock, and that one guy in Enterprise from the future generation-ship-Enterprise, it almost certainly should be. :P

I feel this icon is strangely appropriate.

To be fair, it did take me until episode six to figure it out, when it was confirmed Michael was completely raised in the Vulcan way. Georgiou tried her best, but she didn't have a training manual on how to re-introduce human emotions to a Vulcan-trained human.

Good point, I'd forgotten about Saavik!

Yeah, yup until the flashbacks with Burnham arriving on the Shenzhou I was really hoping we weren't looking at "traumatized Human child raised exactly as if she were a Vulcan." Because for crying out loud, who let Sarek do that? What Human ambassador to Vulcan was like "Yeah, okay, sure, you can keep a child of our species to see if you can raise her as a mini-Vulcan." Whoever that was should be ashamed of themself, because that's exactly not how an embassy should behave in protecting their minor citizens. I mean, can you imagine?!

One would hope? I don't know, it's always been phrased as "Sarek felt responsible, so he raised Michael." Which... is worrying, given how "Stop, inferior Humans, we will handle this from now on because we are VULCANS!" Vulcans can be.

Or maybe I'm just biased by watching Enterprise right now. XD

Sarek being a terrible father is an essential part of Star Trek canon, so the writers of Discovery decided it would be great to give him a second child to mess up. (I follow the novelization canon of Star Trek V where Sybok was raised by his mother and didn't meet Sarek until he was a teenager.)

Does Earth not have social workers in the 23rd century? I'm sure there were plenty of great foster homes available for Micahel.

Which I totally get, but... damn is it ever frustrating. He can't just screw up his own kids, he's gotta go screw up a totally unrelated child of some colleagues, too!

Apparently not, or at least they don't step in when an ambassador is like "Hey, no prob, I'll just raise the kid my way." And apparently Michael's parents didn't have any living family who might have been interested in their child's welfare, either? I don't know. I just, coming at this from the place of Enterprise and the Vulcans' heavy-handed, extremely paternalistic and condescending attitude toward Humans there, find the whole thing very suspicious.

On the anon meme I go to, there's a running joke about the dozens of children Sarek and Amanda obviously adopt, and someone has decided that what with Michael having a bit of Sarek's katra and all now, he must be making horcruxes. :P

I think in the novelization she remembers her parents and there's more of a reason why they were there and she went to Sarek? I haven't read it yet.

All my friends have been raving about these books for ages, but I just never got around to it until a couple gave them to me for my birthday, and WHIZZAP they were on my Kindle and I decided I'd just look, just to kind of be polite, and WHAM, that was it.

My best friend spent, like, years trying to convince me to read them, and I was just like "Yeah, I know, I'll get to it sometime, I swear, I just have a lot of other books and, I don't know, I'm not sure I really get the concept."

Yeah. She was right (as usual).

You know, I think I'm due for a B5 rewatch this summer. (It's gonna look great on my giant high-def TV, right? RIGHT?)

I've long ago accepted that in my head B5 magically transforms into this high-def thing that is glorious, but that when I actually watch it I am instantly thrown into embarrassment squick by all the plywood sets and the bleach-commercial guest stars. But it's just so pretty in my head!

I appreciate how much its aesthetic has turned into Discovery (via Mass Effect) and The Expanse, but sometimes I dream of a reboot where it's not just the aliens who are played by great actors.

Same, but then as soon as I think that I get upset by the idea of the things they would change and the things they'd cut and the general fact that someone else would be playing those aliens, and then I get sad and realize that if they ever do a reboot I will probably be broken to pieces about it.

Discovery's aesthestic = B5 (+ DS9) + Mass Effect: yes, exactly! :D

And your feelings about a reboot are the same as mine. A chance to make a few things even better! Terror that they'd fuck up what I love! Delenn NOT played by Mira Furlan. IDK if I could handle it. (I would, of course, watch it if it existed, at least to see how much it sucked...)

Yeah. I mean, there's this part of me that would love to see B5 redone as beautifully, for instance, as Discovery or as the 2005 BSG reboot, which is also still one of my touchstones for gorgeous, well-done sci-fi. There's an argument to be made for that. There's a huge argument to be made for, like, hey, how about if we had more than one non-white main character? How awesome would that be? How about if we hired all guest stars who were competent actors, rather than hiring a dozen people who can't act their way out of paper sacks and, like, five really good character actors who show exactly how shitty the rest of those guest stars are? And so on.

But doing that requires... well, it requires redesigns, for one thing. Which, for a lot of things, I'd be fine with... but then I realize that you would have to pry the design of the Minbari warships out of my cold, dead hands. Judging by what Discovery has done, it would apparently mean immobile insane makeup for the aliens, especially the Minbari because gosh, we can't have her looking more or less like she does as a Human, that would spoil the surprise later! We've tried that. I've seen the screencaps. It was horrible.

And then there's the actors. Sure, I'll recast Byron and Talia in a heartbeat (oh please let me), and I'll quite happily hand over John Sheridan and even Ivanova and Marcus to be recast, I understand that actors change and characters move on. But the gut-wrenching horror of realizing that a reboot would mean a new person playing Delenn? A new person playing Londo? A new person playing G'Kar? My heart isn't ready. I'm not sure it ever will be.

But I also still want it. XD

Oh. Oh. Tatiana as Susan--oh hell, you know, she could do it. We know she could.

I am not sure I have been introduced to the actress I'd trust with Delenn. But it's possible that somewhere, she exists. I just can't bear to contemplate specifics any sooner than I need to. :D

I like your Jeff and John related thoughts. No love triangles though. ALL the Delenn-centric threesomes instead!

Exactly! We are of one mind on this. :D And I actually can't admit the part of me that's curious/wants a (WELL DONE, BY GOD) reboot to most people, because most of them are fully at the "aaaaaah they would wreck it!" place with it. Understandably!

You COULD have Minbari ships that looked like Minbari ships, only with better quality shimmery hull colours. You WOULD, if I was boss of it. But would we get that??

It would probably come down to who they put in charge of such a reboot, whether they were someone whose worldview and stylistic choices I tended to click with and whose competence I trusted. Someone who I felt loved the original and really got it, you know? I'm sure that no matter what, they'd make choices I disagreed with, because no two people ever have the exact same vision. (Heck, I almost kinda...like...the new Klingons sometimes?) But people who could give Babylon 5 that certain something, I'd feel so much better about.

And who they cast as Delenn. I'm sure that there is actually a young woman out there right now with the intensity and acting chops to match Mira and really give a new Delenn her soul; it's not like powerhouse actresses have ceased to exist since 1992. But she's going to be someone very special and I don't want them just pulling in the first popular face they find. You know? I hope they really search for the right person for that role. I'd be super super cautious until she could sell me on it, but I'd be open to being convinced. Probably. Bonus points if Mira gets to cameo in something neat at some point. :P

G'Kar and Londo's casting as well, hell I would probably have Feelings on whether Susan and Jeff were right. But so much would hinge on Delenn.

But ohhhh my god, if they got it right...

He seems almost protective, which is terrifying.

This reminds me of that odd bit in "Lethe," where Lorca is all "Bring her back in one piece or don't come back" at his new best buddy Ash, and Ash is... somewhat confused when he realizes that Lorca is talking about Burnham, not the shuttle. It's enough to make one think that Lorca has some farther-out purpose that he's holding onto for Burnham, though I can't yet imagine what.

Despite being the one who introduced me to the blasted theory about Ash actually being Voq, my husband has now decided it's a red herring and is too obvious to be true.

As I pointed out to him, this is pretty subtle, for Star Trek.

Anyway, yeah, I think there's a chance Ash's sleeper agent personality will be activated for the cliffhanger. It might still be too early, though, with 6 episodes left.
