I originally called Lorca as Section 31 and to find out that instead we are getting Emperor Georgiou in Section 31 is SO FREAKING PERFECT AND AMAZING. ♥♥♥
Now I just need them to bring her back, like, 2-3 times a season for 7 seasons. It'll be amazing and wonderful. XD
Well, now we know the black badge guys on Discovery early in the piece were Section 31 -- maybe the organisation just really loves getting recruits from the mirrorverse?
(Back in the early 2000s, I ran a mailing list for fics about Section 31, so I am delighted. And seriously considering paying US$30 for a black badge of my own.)
Thank you, I thought I remembered seeing those black badges earlier and thinking that they were Section 31, but I couldn't remember when so I thought maybe I was just remembering the whole "Black Alert" thing and mixing it up in my head with my early-early theory that the whole USS Discovery had been basically conscripted by Section 31. And since we dropped paying for CBS All Access after the series ended I couldn't check. :P
Oh, cool! There's a lot of good opening for stories with them, I'm not surprised either that there would be a fic mailing list or that the show has come back to them again. Showing their presence early on in Starfleet's history was one of the smarter moves that ENT made, I thought -- they provide such an interesting contrast with regular Starfleet procedure, when used in moderation.
The badges in general are sooo tempting. I have been strong so far, mostly because I can't think what I would ever wear one with, so it would wind up just being a desk knickknack. And I don't need more of those. (But so tempting!)

I've been trying so hard to resist all the badges and pins, because (a) I lose them so easily, and (b) I know that the SECOND Funko Pops start coming out, that's where my merch budget will go.
BUT IT'S NOT GETTING ANY EASIER. Especially with a Cornwell pin coming out next month.
"I know that the SECOND Funko Pops start coming out, that's where my merch budget will go."
Oh, man, tell me about it. Any time I see a display of Funko Pops (a pretty common occurrence, due to Seattle being Seattle) I have to go over and scan the whole display to make sure I haven't missed the release.
I'm not catching all the dialogue (nothing's subtitled) but the general gist seems to be that Section 31 wants the Emperor to join up? Which, on the one hand, I'm not that into them, but on the other hand...OMG they SO would want her, and she might be at least slightly intrigued.
But my biggest question is: Is that a Trill pretending to be Human, or a Human pretending to be Trill? (He does turn the spots on and off during the conversation, right? Or did I imagine that?)
I will also put up with a lot for recurring!Georgiou, so. XD
The Emperor says the guy doesn't walk like a Trill or talk like a Trill, so my understanding was that he was a Human pretending to be a Trill.
I wasn't entirely clear what he was turning on and off, but your guess about the spots might be right! That would make a lot more sense than my thought that he was turning off some kind of recording device that my monitor wasn't quite showing.
Also at the beginning the dancing boy comes up to Philippa as she's walking and is all "I was thinking later we could--" and she cuts him off with a pat and says she has plans (poor kid, he's got a crush and I soooo cannot blame him), then the Section 31 guy asks if anyone ever asks her for a lap dance, and she, of course, says "Not and lived" or something very similar.
Dur, way to miss the main point, me. And yes, you're absolutely right that Section 31 wants Emperor Philippa to join up. Most of the rest was just her being like "Eugh, Starfleet" and him being all typical Section 31 posturing about how they're better than Starfleet and they make things happen.
Hah, that's pretty much what I gathered from the couple of lines I picked up and the body language. XD
I thought it might be a recording device too, but something about it made me think of those false faces they had on Agents of SHIELD (the season or two I watched), and when I watched it again I was paying close attention to the spots and I think they blink out when he does that, and then blink back on again. Which if she says he doesn't act like a Trill, yeah, does make me think human. Alas, for I did want real Trills! But at least it confirms that they're in contact with humans at this point/are part of the Known Galaxy.
(It's only a couple of decades before Curzon Dax is the junior Starfleet ambassador at the Khitomer Accords, so I'm glad to see them showing up. No idea if Trill is part of the Federation at this point or not? I think so? but? or whether this guy + the Trill girl casually getting a tattoo in the Orion sector of Qo'noS means anything about that. It could just mean that this guy is undercover & wants to obfuscate his identity as much as possible, or it could mean being Trill is a better thing to be on the Klingon homeworld than human. Who knows. I've thought about this too much. BUT I GOT TRILLS! sorta. :D)
Patting the dancing boy's face is kind of adorable? Like she doesn't feel like she needs to threaten him but she's clearly giving him the brushoff. And of course he wants a(nother) chance at private time (was this the same one from the menage or a different boy?).
Anyone asking Georgiou to give them a lapdance rather than offering to perform one for her...yeahhhhhh, kids, just...don't. XD
Edited (....lapdance =/= laptop, muscle memory, it just isn't...) Date: 2018-03-26 05:55 am (UTC)

I figure that these things suggest that Trills are around and known within the Federation, but not yet part of it? Which makes me wonder if we'll end up going with the TNG canon that they were very secretive about the symbionts until their ambassador was injured on a mission.
(was this the same one from the menage or a different boy?)
Same guy! He popped up in a gifset on my dashboard just yesterday morning, so I recognised his butt beard.

Yeah, that's what I'm tempted to think too. It's probably fairly soonish that they join, if they haven't already, but it makes sense to me that they could still be independent at this point. (I think I have half a line in a fic that assumes that headcanon, actually, with Trill a neutral party in the Federation-Klingon war and/but therefore sometimes individual Trills are willing to help the Federation out with various things).
Which makes me wonder if we'll end up going with the TNG canon that they were very secretive about the symbionts until their ambassador was injured on a mission.
I think the question of "are they in the Federation yet" is a different one from "does the Federation (government, Starfleet, or the Andorian on the street) know about the symbionts yet." I figure they might not be Minbari levels of secret-keeping experts, but they could still keep the whole joining thing secret for ages, I bet.
Rewatching B5 is never a bad thing (and the first time I heard anything about B5 other than that it existed was when I was doing a DS9 roleplay and someone showed up as Londo Mollari to ask my character out for dinner :D).
And they're DS9 Trills, not the horrible "what the fuck was that makeup design?!" original-look Trills from TNG! Thank god. Let's just all agree to forget that nonsense ever happened.
Ooo, very good point. It would make sense, given what we've seen added in with Curzon's involvement in the Khitomer Accords, if the Trill were on better terms with the Klingons than Humans. Not super best friends or anything, but functional, relatively normal trade relations and all that. Or, heck, maybe what we're seeing is just that Trills have always been weird adrenaline junkies who enjoy hanging out with Klingons. Maybe the Dax symbiont just wasn't as unusual as we've always thought. ;)
(...I know it's somewhat unlikely given that running the empire is a dangerous job and all, but I really hope Curzon met L'Rell at some point in the run-up to the accords. I like the idea of Jadzia having memories of her.)
Total brushoff, but in an affectionate if slightly "that's nice, now leave me alone" kind of way. And same dancing boy, I'm pretty sure. I suspect she hired both of them when she decided to stay on Qo'noS and open the cabaret. XD
That's not just taking your life into your own hands, that's basically suicide right there. :P Not to mention just downright lacking in logic.
Lastly, I watched Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon last weekend, for the first time since it came out. So pretty. Mostly meaning just that I spent a lot of time staring at Michelle Yeoh. XD
I just love that they created this character that they killed off in the second episode, but that had such staying power we've all been squeeing over her the whole series! And then they give her back to us, but in a slightly different incarnation - it's just awesome! And now we get to keep her?! What's tbe catch? =D
Seriously, thank you for tposting this here, I could see teh Twitter version and it promises such excellent things to come! YES for recurring Philippa!
